FORMBRIM FIELD NOTES / DESIGN GUIDE

Neck-flap sun hat: the buying guide

A neck-flap sun hat needs a rear-view specification. Flap length, width and attachment determine how it hangs when worn and how it meets the brim. Decide whether it is fixed or removable before placing labels or artwork, and keep any protective rating separate from the amount of visible fabric.

NOTE 01

Flap dimensions and attachment

Specify the flap length, width and attachment concept. Identify whether removability is required or whether the illustrated fixed direction is suitable.

Show where the flap starts, its finished dimensions and the attachment concept. If removable, describe the intended arrangement for review rather than assuming the illustrated fixed design converts directly. Include the flap edge and any attachment area in the artwork drawing so branding does not obstruct it.

NOTE 02

Worn rear coverage

Review coverage and movement in a worn rear view. Check how the flap meets the brim without making the crown pull out of position.

Review the hat worn from behind and in profile, including ordinary head movement. Check whether the flap pulls the crown or catches against the brim. A flat rear photo only shows dimensions, not how the assembled item hangs. Name the location of any concern in the sample notes.

NOTE 03

Shell and flap match

Keep labels and artwork clear of attachment areas. Define flap and shell colors together to avoid an accidental mismatch.

Specify whether shell and flap should match exactly or form a deliberate contrast. Review the physical materials together, including their hand. A thin-looking flap and a structured shell may behave differently at the join. Keep label placement clear of the attachment and verify its orientation when the hat is worn.

NOTE 04

Edge finishing

Confirm edge finishing and packing instructions. Additional fabric coverage does not by itself establish a protective rating.

Inspect edges, corners and attachment finishes from both sides. Discuss how the flap is arranged in the packaging and how it should look after unpacking. Extra coverage does not establish a protective rating; any intended claim needs its own confirmed requirement and supporting evidence.

NOTE 05

A practical buying example

A buyer wants a flap extending lower at the center back while leaving more freedom near the sides. Mark that outline on a rear drawing instead of requesting a generally longer flap. Compare the resulting hang on a wearer. If the hat tips backward, review attachment and material as well as dimensions before approving the revision.

NOTE 06

Questions to settle before requesting a sample

Choose this design when rear fabric coverage is a specific requirement. Ask whether the flap is fixed or removable, where it attaches and how its movement will be reviewed. Compare a regular all-around brim if the wearer does not need a flap. Keep the size, coverage drawing and packing instructions attached to the same style reference.
